RV Conceptualization

My bride and I like to camp. So we spent the last few years looking at RV's. We didn't want a huge gas-guzzler, just a reasonable sized one that got fairly good (well, good for an RV!) mileage. A couple of years ago, a few RV manufacturers started making "compact" RV's (don't laugh), based on the ubiquitous Mercedes-Benz/Dodge diesel delivery vans. We thought they were a great solution. They were about the right size, and supposedly got 15-20 mpg, which is good for an RV. If you're interested, here are links to a couple of them:

I was starting to look around to see if I could get a good deal on one, but stopped for two reasons:
  1. Gas prices went into low-Earth orbit, meaning that even if we could afford to buy an RV, we might not be able to afford putting fuel in it very often.
  2. We realized that we wouldn't just be parking the RV at a campsite - we'd also be driving it on all those local (shopping, sightseeing, etc.) trips we do when we camp. Meaning that we'd probably have to pack up the campsite every time we went anywhere.
So then we thought about buying a pickup and a small trailer. We could park the trailer and take the truck for those local trips. My wife really wanted an Airstream trailer - they they have that cool 1950's "mid-century modern" aluminum finish, and they supposedly last forever. But they're really expensive. And besides, we'd still be driving a fairly large vehicle (the pickup truck) for those local trips. And that we'd be replacing one of our vehicles with a larger, less fuel-efficient pickup truck. So much for that idea.

Then we thought, "Hey! Why not buy a scooter and put it on the back of the RV. We could drive the RV from location to location, and then use the scooter for all those local trips." So we bought the scooter. I use it to commute to work on (except when it snows), and maybe some day we'll have something to attach it to.

But that doesn't still didn't solve the expensive RV fuel situation. I know that even though they've dropped for now (so much for the GOP claim that gas prices wouldn't go back down unless we "drill baby drill"), gas prices are going to go back up.

Today, I saw this concept vehicle. This is the ideal solution. Check it out! You can detach the driving pod from the sleeping pod, and use it do go into town on. Pretty cool, huh?

If this thing goes into production, I may (just may) be back in the market for an RV.

glad to know people are still out there who make a plan and think things through instead of just jumping into things!

Have a great day!
