An update, a correction, and some speculation

The update:

Two weeks ago I commented on former Mariner Randy Johnson's appearance in Seattle as a starting pitcher for the Giants. Since then, Randy won his 300th game, virtually assuring his selection in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Way to go, Big Unit!

The correction:
In the post, I said that I hoped "he [Johnson] chooses to go in wearing a Mariner uniform". I was wrong. I've since learned that the final decision is up to the Hall of Fame staff, not the player.

Interesting (to me, anyway) speculation:
There's a likelihood that both Johnson and the amazing Ken Griffey, Junior will both retire after this season. That would mean that they'd both be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Wouldn't it be great to see them both be inducted into the Hall at the same time? They were rookies together in 1989, and I think it would be fitting for them to be Hall of Fame rookies together as well.

But wait, there's more. As Seattle Times baseball writer Larry Stone put it:
... envision a scenario in which Edgar Martinez, who is on the ballot for the first time after this season, slowly gains in the voting totals (unfortunately, Martinez is not likely to be a first-ballot choice), until he finally scrapes through with the necessary 75 percent on his fifth try.

That could put Johnson, Griffey, Martinez and [Omar] Vizquel all going into the Hall of Fame together in July of 2015. Wow.

(A further aside: As Jim Caple of ESPN.com recently pointed out, has there ever been a better quartet of rookies on one team in baseball history than the 1989 Mariners had in Big Unit (acquired from Montreal in a May 25 trade), Junior, Edgar and Little 0? I can't imagine who it would be).

Imagine that. Four rookies from the same team in the same year, all going into the Hall of Fame together. Maybe Lou Pinella could make it too! As Dave Niehaus would say, "My, oh my!"
