How dare he be scientifically accurate?

I just stumbled onto a news story about "local boy made good", Bill Nye ("the Science Guy"). It seems he was giving a talk in Waco, TX a while ago. At some point during the speech, he mentioned that the moon doesn't generate its own light, but reflects light from the sun. As the news story said
"A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children."
Huh? My question is this: when did believing in God come to mean opposing scientific fact? I thought that ended with Galileo.

Here's the news story.
