Saturday Matinee - John Coltrane

At the Grammy Awards show in 2001, Carlos Santana was onstage with Joni Mitchell to present the award for record of the year. After reading the list of nominees, Mitchell and Santana both leaned forward and paid a great tribute to John Coltrane, announcing the winner (without opening the envelope) as "A Love Supreme".

Coltrane was a musical giant. His musical influence extended from Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, and U2 front man Bono to countless jazz musicians.

Roger McGuinn has acknowledged that the guitar solo that opens the Byrds' classic song "Eight Miles High" was influenced by Coltrane.
